Fire Prevention Activities ongoing

It has been a fickle start to the Fire Danger Period with the weather providing some wetter conditions than forecast which has provided a delay in the curing of grass and continual of vegetation growth.

Ararat Rural City Council commenced Fire Prevention Inspections on properties back in November and have been pleased with the response from property owners.

However, it is a timely reminder to all property owners that its not just at the start of the Fire Danger Period to be aware of fuel reduction, but to continue throughout the whole summer period.

Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Bob Sanders said “It’s really encouraging to see such a positive response from the community in relation to the works they have carried out around their properties”

“Council and emergency services are here to help but it’s the simple precautions that can ensure the safety of our communities” he continued.

Property owners are urged to do their part in keeping any grass, weed, and undergrowth on their properties cut and maintained to a height of less than 100 mm.

“With February, being our hottest and driest month and the additional growth of vegetation that has occurred over the past couple of months,” said Cr Bob Sanders “we ask that property owners not get complacent with fuel reduction.”

A Fire Prevention Notice may be issued to the owner of any land who has not taken the appropriate measures for the removal of fine fuels to protect life and property from the risk of fire. The Municipal Fire Prevention Officer will continue to inspect properties throughout the Fire Danger Period.

“We recognise the danger associated with fire season and our role in keeping the community safe,” he continued.

“Fire prevention is a community effort – there is a lot you can do to protect yourself, your family and your home.”
