Preparations are well underway for a new art exhibition by Ema Shin at Ararat Gallery TAMA that will open this Saturday, July 8.
Developed over 13 years, the Hearts of Absent Women exhibition shines a spotlight on the efforts and creativity of women that have gone unrecognised, through soft embroidered sculptures and textiles.
Ema Shin is a Melbourne-based artist of Korean descent and has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions over the past 15 years. She is currently a finalist in the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award and has been a finalist at the McClelland National Small Sculpture Awards, Victoria Craft Awards, and Kate Derum Award for Small Tapestries.
Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Jo Armstrong said the official opening provides a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate Ararat Gallery TAMA’s new exhibition by Ema Shin.
“Art enthusiasts are invited to join the Gallery for opening celebrations this weekend, which will include speeches followed by light refreshments in the foyer.
“Textile work takes an extraordinary amount of patience, dexterity and expertise – I’m looking forward to hearing Ema share her story behind the work.”
Gallery Visual Arts Coordinator Katy Mitchell is incredibly excited to share Ema Shin’s body of work with the Ararat Community.
“Ema’s work celebrates the diversity of women living in Australia,” said Ms Mitchell. “In one respect, her pieces express sensitivity due to the use of tactile materials, guided by warmth and care. On the other hand, the narrative behind her work in relation to femininity is much deeper.”
